What is Blue Light?
Blue light is a light which you receive from sunlight in the maximum amount. Other than that you receive blue light from Florescent lights, Compact fluorescent light bulbs, LED lights, flat LED televisions, computer monitors, smartphones and tablet screens.
Why to Protect your Eyes from Blue Lights?
Blue light is the most damaging because it is the highest energy light that can reach the retina, and it can react with the chemicals in the retina to produce damaging free radicals, which are molecules that can adversely interact with other molecules inside of our cells. This can leads to AMD.
Evening and late-night exposure to blue light from your smartphones, tablet, computer or television screens will disturb your sleep cycle – alter the circadian rhythm and acutely suppress the melatonin levels, which is responsible hormone for sleep regulation.
Digital Eye strain: Digital eye strain refers to the physical discomfort of eyes after using screens for more than 2 hours.
Retina Damage: Studies reports that continuous exposure to blue light may damage the retinal cells, which may cause vision problems like Age-Related Macular Degeneration.
Effects on Adults : Eye strain, Headaches, Blurred vision, Dry eyes, Neck and shoulder pain. Premature Aging.
Effects on Children : Headaches, Blurred vision, Neck/shoulder Pain, Eye strain, Dry irritated eyes, Poor behavior, Reduced attention span, Irritability.
How to Protect your Eyes from Blue Light?
This is very important for those who deal with Computer screens, Tablets and Mobile-phone screens. Mobile phone usage has increased in all general population. And in some profession computer screen facing more than 5-6 hours is necessary. Hence there should be some protection for your eyes. There are a few ways to reduce blue light exposure.
- Take frequent breaks while using digital devices.
- Use blue light filters : Filters are available in your computers, or you can download the software which provides blue light filters. For mobile users, many apps are available to filter blue light from the screen. Advance technology in smartphone also provides an inbuilt option for blue light filtration.
- Computer Glasses : Computer glasses with Yellow, Grey and brown tint will block blue light.
- Ante – Reflective Lenses : Ante reflective lenses reduce glare and increase contrast and also block blue light from the sun and digital devices.

Really helpful. I have sleep problems so staying away from blue light esp close to bedtime is really important to my sleep life. But I hadn’t thought about it from an eye health perspective before, thanks.
